On-Demand Farmer

For farmers who primarily specialize in crops that often flush on a larger scale just once a year (ie: Cherry Blossoms or Peonies) or grow highly demanded crops (ie: Dahlias), an on-demand relationship with Stemz may be the best fit. On-demand farmers typically sell to Stemz in larger quantities 1-5 times a year, and are not looking for any support or trend forecasting guidance.

REQUIREMENTS

  • You sell something that our Annual Farm Partners do not yet sell or do not sell in enough quantities to fulfill demand on a specific week. 
  • Product delivery to a Main Stemz Hub (or Satellite Hub for 5% Fee)
  • 3% Admin Fee

Simply fill out our online application form.  We’re always excited to potentially work with a new farm! While we don’t have a requirement for experience, most of our farmers have been growing flowers for several years before they apply. Accepted farm partners pay $200 for annual membership and must sell at least $6,000 annually to meet partner requirements.

*Note: There is a $25 application fee to help cover administrative costs. Please allow 2 weeks for application review. 

An application process gives Stemz the ability to thoughtfully balance farmer supply with buyer demand, so that all members are successful and healthy in sales. 

If we feel like you’d be a great fit to work with Stemz, but currently have ample farmer partners supplying the same crops, we would invite you to join our farmer waitlist. This way, as things shift or as demand increases, we will reach out to revisit your application.

Yes, if you are accepted, you can initially begin anytime of the year at a prorated annual membership cost. All Annual Farm Partner Memberships are then renewed and billed in January each year at the full membership price.

Stemz Farm Partners sell their products in two different ways to Stemz buyers. Each requires a different level of advance harvest prediction.

Priority Advance Orders: Through this guaranteed pre-sales method, farmers predict harvest anywhere from 10 days to months in advance of product drop-off. These estimated harvests are not a perfect prediction process but rather based on probability, crop plans, growing years of data, and farmer intuition.

Live Field Inventory: Through this potential sales method via a weekly e-commerce site, farmers predict availability and list anywhere from 1-7 days in advance of product drop-off. Farmers who list as early as possible usually sell the most.

Stemz functions as a hybrid between a local flower co-op and a traditional cut-flower wholesaler. Our goal is to make selling flowers an easy and profitable process for farmers, and our hope is that this hybrid method genuinely answers the needs of the farmer most effectively. 

 

Ways we’re similar to a co-op:

  • Membership based (with balanced supply and demand for optimal sales success)
  • Supportive staff who are deeply invested in the local flower movement
  • Weekly availability listing/ Cut-to-order sales

 

Ways we’re similar to a traditional wholesaler:

  • Stemz sets the price per crop yearly (though we offer notably fairer pricing than traditional wholesalers)
  • Stemz employs experienced staff to focus on marketing, sales, client relationships, e-commerce management, and distribution… ie. After drop-off, you’re done! 
  • Guaranteed pre-sales via committing to Priority Advance Orders (Ie- Grow popular crops & you will essentially have a standing order secured in advance).

Stemz has always incorporated flexibility for the farmer as a key, intentional feature of membership. You can make your own schedule as a farmer as long as you meet the overall requirement of $4500 minimum annual sales. This includes but is not limited to…

  • Flexibility in the seasons you choose to sell 
  • Flexibility in the specific weeks you choose to sell 
  • Flexibility in your cut time (end of sales for week)
  • Flexibility to add/ remove flowers listed for sale throughout current availability cycle

Each week, you will receive a cut-list. Simply harvest & bring sold items to any below product-drop locations.

Note: If you choose to utilize one of our current satellite drop-off locations, a 5% fee is applied to help cover the cost of Stemz vehicle use and staff.

Stemz’ buyers are primarily experienced floral designers looking for fresh, high quality, specialty cut-flowers. Designers are more attuned than your average farmer’s market buyer, but they’re also a bigger, more committed buyer too. So in order to excite and impress our floral designers week to week and provide consistency in product across farms, Stemz guides farmers via thoughtful product grading, helpful photos, and our Harvest Consistency Guide.

Nope! Some of our best growers are “small”. Quality is more important to us than quantity overall. But, with this said, some infrastructure is of course helpful in becoming a successful farm partner, including basics like a cooler and simple tunnels for season extension and quality control.
